Stephen Gould, Inspiration for Mesothelioma Patients

Do not allow yourself to surrender to the circumstances, no matter how painful they may be. The latter is all the important things that come into play if you have a terminal condition. While phrases like "you must be brave" and "always think positive" sounds cliched and very easy to say, it's also true that having a strong personality and power will drive away is the inevitable end. Even if you get the best drugs and treatments are available, falling prone depression would knock off the remaining half of the year as well. Has been scientifically proven that mesothelioma patients who have undergone both physical and mental healing have longer life spans than those who only go in for treatment.

Find inspiration in Stephen Gould who is an evolutionary biologist at the world famous in his time. Stephen Gould was diagnosed with abdominal mesothelioma. When he looked up information to see how much time he had, he found that this is an average of just eight months. Instead of being depressed he interprets things in its own way and based on his personality and determination to stay any longer. Stephen Gould was diagnosed in 1982. He died in 2000, namely, 18 years after diagnosis! He stretched 8 months, up to 18 years. That is a strong mind can do. When asked his friend Sir Peter Medawar Gould, (who happened to be Nobel Prize winner in immunology) about what is the best way to fight cancer, he replied, "an optimistic personality." This only goes to show that the heart and the head of the defense could prove better than the best form of radiation therapy which you can get.

Mesothelioma Symptoms and Signs

Mesothelioma cancer symptoms may not appear until 20 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. Shortness of breath, cough and chest pain due to an accumulation of fluid in the pleural space is often symptoms of pleural mesothelioma.

Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include weight loss and cachexia, abdominal swelling and pain due to ascites (accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity). Other symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma in May of bowel obstruction, blood clotting disorders, anemia and fever. If the cancer has spread beyond the mesothelioma to other parts of the body, symptoms include pain in May, difficulty swallowing, or swelling of the neck or face.

These symptoms can be caused by mesothelioma or by other conditions that are less serious. mesothelioma, which affects the pleura, can cause the signs and symptoms:
  • Pain in the chest wall
  • Pleura effusion or fluid surrounding the lung
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue or anemia
  • Difficulty in breathing, coughing or hoarseness
  • Blood in the sputum (fluid) spit (Hemoptysis)

What Is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a malignant type of cancer that is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos. In this disease, malignant cells develop in the mesothelioma, a protective layer that covers most of the organs of the body. The most common is the pleura (the outer layer of the lungs and internal chest wall), but may also occur in the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity), heart, pericardium (a sac that surrounds the heart) or tunica vaginalis.

Most people who suffer from mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles, or they have been exposed to asbestos dust and fibers in other ways. It has also been suggested that washing the clothes of family members who worked with asbestos can put someone at risk for developing mesothelioma. Unlike lung cancer, no association between mesothelioma and smoking, but smoking greatly increases the risk of other asbestos cancers.
